Grand Theft Auto IV, the latest iteration of the hit video game franchise has racked up an incredible $500 million in its first week of release. Not only does that blow Halo’s figures out of the water by a full $100 million, it puts them on an even footing with such films as The Godfather.

The game’s publisher Take-Two Interactive has announced that it sold 6 million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV in the first week, of which 3.6 million copies were sold on the first day.

The news come just at the right time for Take-Two, a company that has had its share of legal, financial and management struggles in the last few years, and with a $2 billion hostile takeover effort by Electronic Arts on the line. Take Two can now take their time and negotiate for a better deal. Electronic Arts has offered Take Two shareholders $25.74 a share, but on Tuesday Take Two’s shares closed at $26.35, up 29 cents.
